In July 2001 one of the best friends anyone could ask for moved into the house across the street from us & into our lives & our hearts. His name was Cody Minick. It was so funny when he introduced himself because I said his name should be easy to remember since my cat's name was Cody too. Matthew was only 2 yrs old and refused to call him Cody but the man instead because only his cat could have that name--lol. So we all agreed he'd be Cody the Man and our cat was Cody the Cat. There was no question if this person would be a friend or not as we all instantly clicked with each other. He wasn't only a good friend to us all but great neighborhood watchdog as well. Nobody came into our yards that he saw without going over to see what business they had there even the poor UPS, FedEx, exterminator too--lol.
When it came up time for Doug to re-enlist, Cody tried to talk him into going into Private Investigation or security business with him but once a jarhead, always a jarhead and hardhead re-enlisted & uprooted us to NY for 4 years. We kept in touch via phone & email and picked right back up on our friendship upon our return to TX moving in new development just one street down from our old street. Two months later, Cody learned that the cancer he had months earlier in his eye had spread through his bloodstream to his liver and they began treatments for it in March 2007.
Even sick & dealing with his own issues, when Doug went off on a summer deployment, he made sure I had someone to help me with the lawn sending his other close friend Kenny over to do that for me. He helped give me a most awesome late birthday gift recently when he got front table tickets to Bret Michaels "Rock of Love" concert with seats next to the stage along with his wife Holly & her aunt who was also celebrating her birthday. He should have been there with all of us having a great time too instead of fighting this horrible battle.
There was nothing Cody wouldn't do for a friend and good friends are so hard to find these days which makes it even harder losing him. There will never be another Cody but we will always have our memories of him being so happy and full of life and carry that in our hearts
Cody was born July 11, 1967, in Bismarck, N.D., to Dianne Schafer and Billy Minick. Despite his roots in North Dakota, he moved to Fort Worth with his family at a young age and grew up among a wide circle of family and friends, including his devoted and loving stepparents, Eddie Walker and Pam Minick. Cody lived in the Eagle Mountain Lake area and graduated from Lake Country Academy in 1985.
Cody served proudly in the United States Navy. He completed his recruit training in San Diego, Calif., in 1986 and was subsequently stationed in Millington, Tenn., where he was a member of the Flying Rifles Drill Team. Cody was also stationed in Mountain View, Calif., and Whidbey Island, Wash., where he served in the NAS security department and in aviation ordnance. Cody also spent time on the supercarrier USS Ranger and always reflected with reverence on his time serving our country.
Following his military service, Cody assembled a distinctive law enforcement career. After graduating from Gavilan College Police Academy in Gilroy, Calif., he worked for the Los Altos Police, the Foothill College Police and ultimately joined the South San Francisco Police Department in 1993. Cody's accomplishments in the South San Francisco force led him to the appointment of field training officer and as a notable member of the SWAT team of San Mateo County. Cody was continually praised by his fellow officers for his character, drive, hard work and ethics. He was formally recognized for excellence with a chief commendation and for his courage on two occasions with a Purple Heart Medal for injuries sustained in the line of duty.
Cody combined his police and military training into a security and private investigations business to great success before joining the family business in Fort Worth, Best Used Trucks. Cody thrived as a part of the sales team at Best and loved going to work everyday with his family. Before his career came to an untimely end, in just three short years he earned the respect of dealers and customers across the country, producing sales of Class 8 trucks and semi-trailers that equalled the top performers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Undoubtedly, Cody's remarkable focus on teamwork propelled him to the top.
Cody's hometown of Fort Worth is where he met the love of his life, Holly Overstreet. Cody and Holly's love for each other turned into marriage, which brought Peter and Julia Castrichini, Holly's parents, into Cody's seemingly unending world of people he loved dearly.
Against all odds, Cody gallantly battled cancer for over two years. Arm in arm with his brave wife, Holly, with the remarkable determination of his mother, Dianne, and with a host of caring family and friends, he waged a heroic battle in search for a cure.
The memory of Cody Minick, loving father, son, friend and brother, will never fade from our hearts.
